The drawings in this collection depict a deliberately confused, black- and-white scenario in which the artist traces, through clear and faded lines, images of refugee camps, tents, conglomerates of displaced people, and lacerated streets, all fused into a dense and highly compelling composition whose abstraction reproduces the looming and constant sense of bewilderment and confusion.
Since the beginning of Israel’s war against Gaza in October 2023, the artist has been documenting the reality of genocide on a daily basis through hundreds of drawings and sketches, and continued his work as an educator by organizing workshops for children in displacement camps.
Basel El-Maqousi is a Palestinian artist born in Gaza in 1971.
El Maqousi has more than 25 years of experience as an art teacher at Jabalia Association for Rehabilitation, working with children, particularly those with hearing disabilities.
He is the co-founder, along with Shareef Sarhan and Majed Shaladi, of Shababeek for Contemporary Art, an art space specializing in exhibiting contemporary art that opened in 2009 in Gaza City, which together with the Eltiqaa group provided for several years an essential space for the artistic community of Gaza.
