Titled Sonnenallee: Recipes from the Street, Ayami Awazuhara’s culinary guide booklet explores the rich cultural heritage of Sonnenallee in Berlin through a combination of food and photography.

Sonnenallee: Recipes from the Street was inspired by Awazuhara’s interactions with other culinary experts who worked along the street in Neukölln, known for being a center of immigrant life in Berlin. Through conversations with vendors and shoppers, mothers and children, Awazuhara discovered some of the most vital recipes for people who frequent Sonnenallee.

Awazuhara’s work is grounded in the philosophy that food carries stories, history, and connections. Led by her belief that what we eat is more than an ephemeral expression of biological need, Awazuhara set out to discover the recipes that the people living and working along Sonnenallee most deeply cherish. The recreation of these often-ancient recipes in foreign places allows immigrant communities to grasp their histories. To taste and to make these recipes is to understand that each dish brings with it more than flavor, but rather also stories of cultural resilience, adaptation, and continuity.
