The series “Untitled (Witnessing the deep deep blackhole we are digging in this earth, waiting for it to swallow us all, one by one)” was created by Monia Ben Hamouda solely for Zitto Editions.
The works are a cathartic reaction to the immeasurable violence inflicted on Gaza on a daily basis for almost two years now.
Ben Hamouda processes the incessant flow of news on paper.
The act of being so close, with her eyes and chest pressed against the paper as it fills with color, allows the pain to transpire from her body onto the medium. It is an act of complicity, a meditative and healing necessity.
The title of the series stems from a conversation between Ben Hamouda and a friend in Bethlehem, embodying both the distance that separates them and the unity born of collective despair. It encapsulates the violence and loss of belief in society.
As a gesture that carries lament and closeness, “Untitled (Witnessing the deep deep blackhole we are digging in this earth, waiting for it to swallow us all, one by one)” continues Ben Hamouda’s series of drawings, “Rage Passing Through Generations” (also available through Zitto), which addresses themes such as accountability and political consciousness, cultural heritage, and the generational transmission of hardship, anguish, and trauma.
