She knocked on the door of one of the richest houses, but got no answer, so she sat down on the doorstep, her heart broken by memories. She had lived in her village, Hamama, in luxury and prestige. Her father was one of the town’s notables, her husband was the mayor, and her house was built of brick, surrounded by vineyards and orange groves. She knocked on the door several times, hoping to find someone who would give her a loaf of bread or a sip of water, or perhaps someone who could heal her broken heart. Weeping and sighing, she died on the doorstep of that house, leaving her young children behind.
She is my grandmother, Mariam al-Zahar, who was forced to leave her land in 1948. I tell you, Grandma, that the same scene is repeating itself with me this year, in 2024. Can our hearts bear this injustice and oppression?
Here I am, pitching my tent with my children in Rafah, lying on the sand, looking at the sky. There are no stars shining, only planes bombing and massacring. Grandmother, the land has become too small for us.
