Using painting, drawing, and printmaking, Elijah Burgher (b. 1978) works at the crossroads of representation and abstraction, image and language, and the real and imagined. Drawing from the occult, mythology, daily life and ancient history, he has created an intimate code of symbolism that traces the personal and cultural dynamics of desire, belief, and subcultural formation.

“Moon and Swords” was created with a technique called pressure printing, which uses a letterpress to transfer ink onto paper through stencils. This technique lacks the precision of drawing, sometimes resulting in enchantingly fractured colors. Each print from Burgher’s series is a unique combination of forms, colors and accidents. He views these pieces not as prints, but rather as drawings made with the assistance of a machine.
