Yasmeen Al Daya has continued working throughout the current genocide. Despite numerous displacements, she has adapted her art practice to the circumstances using whatever materials are available to her. In order to transport her sculptures with her during each forced displacement, she began creating sculptures at a portable scale. In this way, her lived reality is reflected in the work on a formal level: her creative decisions have changed due to the necessities of her experience. Are these maquettes or small prototypes for larger works? Are they lost artifacts from another time whose purpose and context we can never know? Each of Yasmeen Al Daya’s artworks can be held in one hand, yet each one seems to contain a universe, or exists as a memory of a cosmic past.
