محمد محرم (Mohammed Moharm) developed his photographic practice almost by chance, while taking long walks across the Gaza Strip, where he chronicled daily life before and during the genocide with a cherished secondhand camera given to him by a photojournalist friend. His powerfully evocative photographs document the reduction of a once thriving seaside landscape to rubble, while also bearing witness to quiet moments of joy, resilience, and solidarity that have endured despite the devastation.
The images shown here comprise only a small selection from the artist’s vast archive, a trove of remembrance about which he writes: “Until recently, I rarely left my city—only a few days during my entire life—so photography became my way of traveling and realizing my dream of letting my images cross borders into the world. Since 2017, I have documented the simple details of everyday life: people’s faces, market scenes, children playing, and other fleeting moments that once felt ordinary. I shot most of these photographs with my Fujifilm X-E1, a camera that is rare and almost impossible to find in Gaza, and one I loved dearly. I did not know these images would become memories of places and times that no longer exist as they once did. Today, I carry my camera to preserve life from being forgotten, and to share stories of people who live, love, and dream despite everything.”
Late last fall, Moharm arrived in London to pursue graduate studies in photography at the Royal College of Art.
