Abu Al-Kuffiyeh, a central figure in the work of Mohammed Alhaj, explores themes of displacement and the search for identity, attempting to connect the struggles in Gaza and the West Bank. Abu Al-Kuffiyeh is a representation of a displaced Palestinian, draped in a traditional kuffiyeh but otherwise bare, half-naked, vulnerable in the face of violence and erasure. As this figure moves from place to place, searching for safety and stability, he sometimes carries an olive branch and at other times drags behind him the weight of his memories.

This handprinted leporello was created in a small edition of twelve copies in the framework of the Berlin Pavilion of the Gaza Biennale, a displaced art exhibition set forth in Gaza in November 2024 and reaching Berlin in November 2025. The book was designed by Afshin Chizadi together with Mohammed Alhaj and published by Nashr Publications.
